Irene H. Schafer, age 83, passed away February 15, 2017. She was born July 20, 1933 to George and Mary (Nurenberg) Martin. Irene was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she worked for the parish in the 1970’s. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. Irene was a wonderful cook and enjoyed sewing when her children were young. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Reynold Martin. Irene is survived by her cherished husband of 63 years, Michael; children, Larry (Mary Ann) Schafer, Sue (Steve) Heiden, Michelle Schafer; grandchildren, Brett VanHorn and Madison VanHorn; siblings, Hilary (Donna) Martin, Bernie (Robert) Pung, and Rita (Jerry) Schrauben; sister-in-law, Mary Martin; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to the Portland Burger King Family for the kindness they have shown to our parents over the years. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 20, 2017 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Rev. Larry King presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at the Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. The rosaries will be prayed at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sunday. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
